Selection begins with composition, concentration, solids content, viscosity across the operating temperature range and any tendency to polymerize, crystallize, flash or release gas. These properties determine the usable Reynolds-number range, pressure-tap arrangement and whether a standardized coefficient applies. Wedge meters can be considered for viscous or solids-bearing duties when the ISO 5167-6 limits or a representative calibration cover the actual design. Clean, single-phase utilities may be better served by a standardized orifice, nozzle or Venturi.
Wetted materials are selected from the project corrosion study and piping specification, not from a generic stainless-steel rule. Base material, cladding or lining, gaskets, fasteners, pressure taps, impulse tubing and any diaphragm seal must be compatible with the process and cleaning method. Design pressure and temperature, corrosion allowance, fabrication, heat treatment and inspection requirements remain governed by the applicable mechanical code and customer specification.
Maintainability is part of measurement performance. Flush ports, remote seals, purging, heat tracing or enlarged taps may be needed, but each modification must be included in the documented coefficient or calibration basis. The installation review also identifies control valves, elbows, reducers and branches that can distort the velocity profile. Where straight pipe is limited, use a documented short-run arrangement or calibration rather than assuming that a compact device is automatically insensitive to disturbances.
